A dentist for anxious patients – calm, unhurried care at Gärtnerplatz
A great many people feel anxious about visiting the dentist – some so much so that they put off appointments for years. If that sounds familiar, you have come to the right place. At our practice on Gärtnerplatz in Isarvorstadt, we take our time, explain each step and only ever go as far as you are comfortable with. We both worked as dentists in England for more than ten years, so you are very welcome to talk to us about your worries in English, without having to search for the right words.
We hope that you will find your treatment more relaxed than you expect – and that, in time, you will come to trust the dentist again.
Always the same dentist – on the phone, too
We have deliberately kept our practice small, with a family feel. There are two of us: dentist Jens-Uwe Buchholz and Dr. med. dent. Anna Buchholz. If you are anxious, this makes a real difference:
- No changes: the same dentist looks after you from start to finish.
- A dentist on the other end of the line: when you ring us, you speak directly to a dentist – not to a switchboard.
- We know your story: you will not need to explain your worries afresh at every appointment. We know what matters to you and what helps.
- A family atmosphere: rather than a large, anonymous practice, you will see familiar faces at every visit.
There is nothing to be embarrassed about
People feel anxious about the dentist for all sorts of reasons: a bad experience as a child, worry about pain, a feeling of not being in control, or simply embarrassment because it has been a while since the last visit. All of this is entirely understandable. We will never judge you – we would much rather look ahead with you.
How we help you feel at ease
- Time to get to know each other: your first appointment is above all a conversation. We will only carry out treatment if you would like us to.
- No surprises: we will tell you beforehand what is about to happen and what you are likely to feel.
- You stay in control: we agree on a hand signal together. As soon as you raise your hand, we stop.
- Breaks whenever you need them: there is no need to "grit your teeth" and simply get through it.
- Careful anaesthetic: we make sure the local anaesthetic has taken full effect before we begin.
- Small steps: if you need several treatments, we start with short, straightforward appointments.
Modern, gentle treatment
Modern methods help to make treatment as comfortable as possible. Digital X-rays give us clear, detailed images with low radiation exposure. Wherever we can, we work minimally invasively – as gently as possible, and preserving as much of your natural tooth as we can.
Your first appointment
- Booking: online via Doctolib or by phone – when you ring, you speak directly to a dentist. Do feel free to mention that you are feeling anxious; we will then set aside more time for you.
- Getting to know each other: we talk about your experiences, your worries and what you would like.
- An examination when you are ready: we look at your teeth and gums and calmly explain what we find.
- A plan made together: we decide together which treatments are needed and in what order.
- Treatment at your own pace: step by step, with breaks, and always with the same dentist.
What you can do yourself
- Do tell us openly how you feel – the more we know, the better we can help.
- Try to book your appointment at a time when you will not need to rush off afterwards.
- Slow, deep breaths – especially breathing out calmly – can help to ease tension.
- If it would help you feel more at ease, you are very welcome to bring someone you trust.
Frequently asked questions from anxious patients
I haven't been to the dentist for years. Should I feel embarrassed?
Not at all. Many of our patients come to us after a long break. What matters to us is simply that you are taking this step now. We never judge anyone – instead, we find a way forward together.
Will I see a different dentist each time?
No. There are two dentists at our practice, and you will always be treated by the same one. This helps to build trust – and you will not need to get used to a new face at every appointment.
Will I have treatment straight away at my first appointment?
Only if you would like to. Your first appointment is mainly a chance to get to know each other. If you are in acute pain, of course, we will help you straight away.
Will I feel the anaesthetic injection?
Many patients feel only a brief prick or a slight sense of pressure. We go slowly and carefully, and we wait until the anaesthetic has taken full effect before we begin.
Can I stop the treatment at any time?
Yes. With the hand signal we have agreed, you can stop the treatment whenever you wish. We will then take a break and talk about how you would like to continue.
May I bring someone with me?
Yes, of course. Many patients feel more at ease with someone they trust beside them. Just let us know.
