Veneers – very thin ceramic shells
Veneers are very thin shells of ceramic that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They can refine the shape and shade of your front teeth and correct minor irregularities, giving your smile a more balanced look.
Cosmetic dentistry has been a particular interest at our practice at Gärtnerplatz for many years. What we aim for is a natural result that suits your face.
When might veneers be suitable?
- discolouration that whitening cannot lighten sufficiently
- small gaps between the front teeth
- teeth that are slightly crooked, short or unevenly shaped
- chipped or worn edges
Where teeth are more noticeably out of line, straightening them with clear aligners may be the more conservative approach – sometimes combined with veneers. We will be happy to talk you through the options.
Why ceramic?
High-quality ceramic lets some light pass into the material, much as natural enamel does. This gives it the slightly translucent sheen of a real tooth. Ceramic also keeps its colour, is well tolerated and is highly resilient.
What to expect
- Consultation and planning: We talk about what you would like and check that your teeth and gums are healthy.
- Preparation: Usually, the tooth surface needs only minimal preparation for the veneer to fit exactly. In some cases, none is needed at all.
- Choosing the shade and shape: We carefully match the shade and shape to your other teeth and to your face.
- Bonding: The finished veneers are permanently attached to your teeth with a special adhesive.
Frequently asked questions about veneers
How long do veneers last?
Ceramic veneers are very durable and, with good care, can last for many years. Regular check-ups and professional teeth cleaning (a thorough hygiene appointment) help them to do so.
Do my teeth need to be filed down for veneers?
Usually only a very thin layer of enamel is removed – considerably less than for a crown. In suitable cases, veneers can be bonded with no preparation at all. We will look at what is possible for you during your consultation.
Will I be able to feel my veneers?
Veneers are very thin and precisely shaped to your teeth. Most people get used to them within a short time and do not notice them day to day.
Do veneers become discoloured?
Ceramic keeps its colour and absorbs hardly any staining from coffee, tea or red wine, so your veneers will hold their shade in the long term.
How much do veneers cost?
As a cosmetic treatment, veneers are generally paid for privately. The cost depends on the number of teeth and the work involved. After your consultation, we will prepare a personal cost plan for you.
