Professional teeth cleaning in the heart of Munich
However carefully you brush, there are always places a toothbrush cannot quite reach. Over time, plaque and tartar build up – particularly between the teeth and along the gum line – and coffee, tea, red wine or smoking leave their own stains.
Professional teeth cleaning (a thorough hygiene appointment) removes these deposits thoroughly and gently, and is one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. At our practice at Gärtnerplatz, we carry out every hygiene appointment ourselves, so you are always looked after by your own dentist.
Why a regular hygiene appointment is worthwhile
- Prevention: bacterial plaque is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease (periodontitis). Removing it regularly lowers the risk considerably.
- Early detection: while cleaning, we look closely at every tooth and can spot changes early on.
- Fresher breath: plaque is a common cause of bad breath.
- Brighter teeth: surface stains are removed, leaving your teeth visibly brighter and pleasantly smooth.
What happens at a hygiene appointment
- Assessment: we examine your teeth and gums and show you where plaque tends to collect.
- Removing tartar: we gently loosen hard deposits using ultrasound.
- Cleaning with Airflow: a fine jet of powder and water removes soft plaque and stains – even in hard-to-reach places and between the teeth.
- Polishing: smooth tooth surfaces give new plaque less to cling to.
- Fluoride: finally, we apply a fluoride preparation to strengthen the tooth enamel.
- Tips for home: we show you how best to care for your teeth and the spaces between them.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
For most patients, we recommend a hygiene appointment once or twice a year. If your risk is higher – for example with gum disease, braces or implants, or if you smoke – shorter intervals may be advisable. We will agree the right rhythm with you.
Frequently asked questions about professional teeth cleaning
Is a hygiene appointment uncomfortable?
Usually not. If you have sensitive tooth necks or inflamed gums, the cleaning can feel a little uncomfortable in places. Please do let us know, and we will take particular care.
How long does it take?
Usually about an hour. The exact time depends on how much plaque there is and how long it has been since your last cleaning.
Will a scale and polish make my teeth whiter?
A scale and polish removes stains on the surface of the teeth, such as those from coffee, tea or smoking, so your teeth often look noticeably brighter afterwards. It does not, however, change your natural tooth colour – for that, there is teeth whitening.
Will my health insurance cover the costs?
If you have statutory health insurance, professional teeth cleaning is usually a private service, although many statutory insurers contribute towards it. It is best to check with your insurer directly. If you are privately insured, reimbursement depends on your policy.
