Teeth whitening – professional home bleaching in the heart of Munich
The natural colour of teeth varies from person to person, and teeth also darken over the years – partly with age, partly through coffee, tea, red wine or smoking. Professional whitening can noticeably lighten your natural teeth again.
At our practice at Gärtnerplatz, we have deliberately chosen to offer home bleaching only. You whiten your teeth at home with custom-made trays, under our guidance and supervision as your dentists.
Why we prefer home bleaching
- You choose the shade: Your teeth become a little lighter with each application. Once you are happy with the colour, you simply stop.
- Easy to top up: The effect of whitening does not last for ever. To keep your teeth at the shade you prefer, a short top-up roughly every six months is generally recommended.
- Affordable top-ups: The trays are yours to keep. To top up, all you need is fresh bleaching gel, which you can obtain from us.
- Gentle and at your own pace: Your teeth are lightened gradually over several applications.
What causes discoloured teeth?
- Surface staining comes from pigments in food, drinks and tobacco. It can often be removed with professional teeth cleaning (a thorough hygiene appointment) alone.
- Internal discolouration lies within the tooth itself – for example as a result of age, or whitish and yellowish patches in the enamel. This is where bleaching can help.
How home bleaching works
- Examination and consultation: We check that your teeth and gums are healthy and discuss what result you can realistically expect.
- Teeth cleaning: Your teeth should be free of plaque before bleaching, so we often recommend a hygiene appointment beforehand.
- Custom trays: We take a record of your teeth and make thin, precisely fitting bleaching trays for you here in our practice.
- Instructions: We hand you your trays and the bleaching gel and show you exactly how to use them and what to bear in mind.
- Whitening at home: You wear the trays with the gel as we have advised until you are happy with the shade. Depending on the gel, this is usually one to two hours a day. Many patients reach the shade they would like after only a few applications.
- Check-up: At a follow-up appointment, we look at the result together and answer any questions you may have.
- Topping up: As the colour fades over time, you can refresh it with your trays and fresh gel from our practice.
Good to know
- Bleaching lightens natural teeth only. Fillings, crowns and veneers keep their colour. If any are visible, we will discuss beforehand how to keep the overall appearance balanced.
- During and after bleaching, your teeth may be temporarily sensitive to cold or heat. This is common and usually settles by itself.
- While whitening, it is best to avoid strongly staining food and drinks, and smoking, as far as possible.
- We do not offer bleaching to anyone under 18, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Frequently asked questions about teeth whitening
How white will my teeth become?
That is very much up to you. With home bleaching, your teeth become lighter step by step, and you stop as soon as you are happy with the shade. How far they can be lightened depends on your starting shade and the type of discolouration. We will discuss what is realistic during your consultation.
How long will the result last?
The effect of bleaching does not last a lifetime. How quickly the colour fades depends mainly on your habits – coffee, tea, red wine or smoking, for instance. To keep the shade you prefer, a top-up roughly every six months is generally recommended. With your existing trays and fresh gel, this is simple and inexpensive.
Does bleaching damage the teeth?
For healthy teeth, bleaching under a dentist's guidance is considered a gentle procedure. Your teeth may be temporarily sensitive. An examination beforehand is important, as any decay or leaking fillings should be treated before bleaching.
Why not simply buy a whitening kit from the chemist?
Over-the-counter kits come with standard trays that do not fit exactly, and nobody examines your teeth first. With home bleaching from your dentist, the trays fit precisely, the gel works where it should – on your teeth – and we support you throughout.
How much does teeth whitening cost?
Bleaching is a cosmetic treatment and is not covered by health insurance. We will discuss the costs with you beforehand. For later top-ups, you only need fresh gel – your trays can be used again and again.
